The Ramon Magsaysay Student Essay Competition (RMSEC) is on its maiden run in India this year, under the auspices of the Ramon Magsaysay Award Foundation (RMAF) and St. Stephen’s College, Delhi. This pilot of the prestigious competition in a South Asian center is a part of the competition’s Asian evolution. In 2004, RMSEC also held a limited run in South Korea following initial competitions in the Philippines, where the contest started in 2000 as a way for the Magsaysay Award, Asia’s premier prize, to establish a connection with the youth. The expanded RMSEC in India invites the participation of undergraduate students at the St. Stephen’s College, the Lady Shri Ram College for Women and Hindu College - all of Delhi University, and the Amity Institute of English and Business Communication.
Institutional partnerships play a big role in RMSEC in India. The three finalists of RMSEC in India will win personal computer systems provided each by UNICEF, NIIT Global Learning Solutions, and Satyam Computer Services, including hi-speed internet connections from Sify Broadband. A month’s internships also await the finalists at New Delhi TV, Hindustan Times, and The Indian Express. The grand prize winner will receive an all expense paid trip to the Philippines from RMAF to witness the conferment of the 2007 Magsaysay awardees in August, attend the awardees’ lecture series, and immerse in slices of Philippine life, particularly in Zambales, the home province of the late President Ramon Magsaysay, who inspired the creation of the award.
Satyam’s partnership with the RMAF will be highlighted at various public affairs events during the 2007 Magsaysay Award season in August 2007 when the RMSEC in India grand prize winner shall also be presented.
