Bangalore – June 18, 2012 – Mahindra Satyam, a leading global consulting and IT services provider, today announced the winners of Mahindra Satyam Young Engineer Awards, 2011. Launched in 2010, this unique initiative prioritizes essential technology domains in the industry and recognizes outstanding talent among Indian Engineering students in the areas of Aerospace Engineering and Mechatronics. This initiative is expected to yield multi-fold long-term benefits to the Engineering ecosystem. Academia can align the curriculum more strongly with respect to industry needs, and student community can focus on emerging domains thereby building career paths and industry can benefit with ready-to-deploy talent pool.
Aerospace is a domain which takes about 15 years to get into a large design house and Mahindra Satyam is already an established player with 10 years of leadership in the industry. Whereas Mechatronics is a competency that is gaining importance as the automotive and industrial customers facing challenges with advanced nanotechnologies being integrated into functionally complex electronic systems. Aligning with these industry needs, additional categories of Avionics, Composite structures and Mechatronics systems as the major topics were also considered.
The award winners were chosen from the nominations received across bachelors, masters as well as research streams. More than 100 teams consisting of 250 students representing 70 premier institutes including IITs, IISc, NITs and other reputed colleges participated in this contest. An eminent panel comprising retired academic experts and senior technical consultants evaluated the nominations for critical parameters like application of new methodology; industry oriented-practically feasible solution, analysis and interpretation.

- Aerospace (Bachelors & Masters) – Winner – Vision based autonomous landing of an unmanned aerial vehicle by R. N. Gireesh Kumar, R. Raveendran from MIT Chennai
- Aerospace (Research) – Winner – Design and development of Smart Flap, By Rajnish Mallick from IISc Bangalore
- Mechatronics (Bachelors & Masters) – Winner – Design of an autonomous underwater glider - by Sanket Diwale, Intesaaf Ashraf, Prasanna Shevare from IIT Mumbai
- Mechatronics (Bachelors & Masters) – Runner-up – Refreshable tactile display for the visually impaired – by Pranay Jain, Anshul Singhal from IIT Delhi

The winners were felicitated in an event organized by Mahindra Satyam in Bangalore. Executives from global OEMs, Consultants, Senior Technical Experts, Leaders from industry and associations hosted in the event acknowledged the initiative and deliberated on the related topics.
