International Day of Persons with Disability – December 3, 2009
WORKSHOP ON CORPORATE SENSITIZATION
Globally the International Day of Persons with Disability is observed on December 3 every year. The day aims to promote an understanding of disability issues and mobilize support for the dignity, rights and well-being of persons with disabilities. It also seeks to increase awareness of gains to be derived from the inclusion of persons with disabilities in every aspect of life.
Each year the day is observed around a theme. For the year 2009 the theme is "Making the MDGs inclusive: Empowerment of persons with disabilities and their communities around the world". The theme has been selected to draw attention to and promote a better understanding of disability issues and mobilize action for the empowerment of persons with disabilities.
At Mahindra Satyam Foundation too the day was observed with sessions on sensitization for corporates: both internal for Mahindra Satyam associates and external for 15 software companies represented by HR teams.
The day started with corporate sensitization on disability at the Infocity campus of Mahindra Satyam. The Corporate Services team of Infocity arranged not only the conference room but also roped in associates from Marketing & Communication, and Sales team. Around 20 associates were part of the 90-minute session. Mr. V C Kumar, Head & COO, Mahindra Satyam Foundation, gave an introductory talk before the actual session started. Ms. Sahitya, from Empowering Persons with Disability Program took over, with other team members moderating the session. When the associates entered the room they had a bewildered look on their faces and they had no idea of what the session was all about, wondering if it was worth spending 90 minutes leaving their work. As the session progressed associates started showing interest and participated enthusiastically as it was designed to be interactive. To keep the interest levels alive, associates were quizzed in between, with prizes for the correct answers. The session ended with positive feedback from the associates, who were glad that they had a chance to attend such a knowledgeable session. The associates left on a good note saying they would proliferate the awareness.
"The program was pretty good and I'm glad that I could take time off to attend it. The program helped me realize how important it is to have empathy and not judge a person by the disabilities they have. The session was very interesting with nuggets of info and quizzes popping up. The session also helped me know some of the greatest personalities—Einstein, Tom Cruise, Franklin D Roosevelt—also suffered from some form of disability and it's with their grit and commitment they could dwarf the problems and realize what they have aspired for. Kudos to Sahitya and Team for taking up this initiative" - Murali Duggineni
The second session in the afternoon was held at TCS. The participants were mostly HR professionals from nearly 15 software companies and their CSR teams. Everyone was eagerly waiting for the session to start. As the participants were aware of what disability was, the session was a bit more intense with discussion of serious issues. One such concern was "if words such as challenged, deaf, dumb, blind etc., are not politically correct, then the word 'disabled' also should not be used, as it is also 'discriminating'". The crowd resolved to dash off a letter to the UN regarding the contradiction. There was a quiz for which participants won prizes for the correct answers. At the end, the teams affirmed that they will try to induct as many as PWDs possible in their respective organizations.
