| A little motivation goes a long way… |

15-year old Shambhavi secured 480 out of 600 marks in the 10th class Board exams conducted in March 2008. Behind this achievement is a story of sheer determination - a determination to succeed.
Shambhavi is the youngest of three children and lives in a slum adjacent to the Old Hyderabad Airport named Anna Nagar, in Secunderabad. Last year, the month of November was celebrated as ‘Children’s Special Month’ by Mahindra Satyam Foundation with more than 200 Mahindra Satyam associates regularly visiting Govt.

| Schools in Hyderabad and Secunderabad. Motivating the students of class 10, helping them set their goals in life was one of the exercises the volunteers took up on a regular basis. During one such session, inspired by our volunteers, Shambhavi declared to her fellow students that her dream in life is to become an Engineer…and started working towards reaching her goal. |
| Sambhavi’s joy knew no bounds when she was selected into the Indian Institute of Information Technology, Hyderabad (IIIT). She attributes her success to the Mahindra Satyam team who mentored and motivated her. |
| Her teacher Mrs. Nirmala said, “Our school is very proud that she was selected for IIIT from our mandal, despite the fact that we do not have proper infrastructure or teaching aids. The credit definitely goes to Mahindra Satyam Foundation and the M7 team who supported us and the students in many ways. We look forward for the same support this academic year also.” |

| There’s always hope! |
| Mohsin was a bright child, pursuing his 9th standard, when he was caught stealing bikes with his friends. A victim of circumstances, he is confined to the Observation Home for boys where he is serving his term before he could be released. With a very bleak future, Mohsin’s dreams turned to dust. |
| Luckily for Mohsin, Mahindra Satyam Foundation’s interventions with the most vulnerable children changed his perspective on life. A highly dedicated team of Mahindra Satyam Volunteers visited the Observation Home regularly on weekends, spending time with the children, bonding, mentoring, motivating, coaching, teaching and rekindling their dreams. Over a period of time, there was a marked positive change in Mohsin’s thinking. He is now intent on passing his 10th standard exams and working hard. He speaks in English and loves to recite Hindi poetry and has made up his mind to be somebody in the future- preferably a pilot. |
| With sparkling eyes and confident speech, this change in Mohsin’s attitude has amazed the warden of the Home. The warden and the Superintendant also affirmed that after Mahindra Satyam associates started visiting the Home there has been a tremendous improvement in the children’s outlook “towards life”. They aspire to be better individuals and look at life with less bitterness. |

| Changing perceptions for a clean and green transformation! |
| Mahindra Satyam Foundation in partnership with Kukatpally Municipality, Hyderabad, undertook a comprehensive, eco-friendly and sustainable solid waste management project on a pilot basis, in Kukatpally, Phase V - one of the biggest Municipalities in Hyderabad, India. The challenge was to change the negative perceptions of the population, to educate and sensitize the stakeholders involved on the importance of Solid Waste Management. |
| A variety of strategies were developed for all the stakeholders (community members, trash collectors, officials from the municipality, citizen groups, and welfare associations) including discussions, deliberations, and continuous awareness and sensitization programs on source segregation. Field assistants visited every household canvassing and motivating them to participate in source segregation, distributing flyers, stickers and posters. Sports and games, rallies and campaigns were held on a regular basis. World Environment Day and Green Consumer Day were observed in the community focusing on waste management and encouraged households to create “wealth from waste”. Eco-friendly celebrations were encouraged for festivals like Ganesh Chathurthi and Diwali. Children played a major role as ambassadors to reach out to the community, convincing households who were resisting our efforts. To motivate trash collectors, and their family members, Mahindra Satyam Foundation facilitated immunization (Hepatitis B vaccination) programs. |
| At the end of one year, our efforts paid off and most of the community felt that after the intervention of Mahindra Satyam Foundation, the colony is clean, neat and better. “Now we know what is organic and inorganic waste, how to convert organic waste into compost to nourish our gardens and avenue plants,” said an active volunteer from the community. |
